HLTH 349, the Health Studies Internship, seeks to connect students with healthcare providers in the greater Galesburg community to learn more about professions in healthcare. This particular project asked students to work collaboratively on data curation and analysis, visualization building, and the creation of a public-facing website to present their findings.
Thematically, this project engages the topic of dental health in rural communities throughout the United States. It has five inter-related goals:
- To develop knowledge about US rural dental health, with particular consideration of any disparities between rural and non-rural dental health
- To develop data skills, including curation, analysis, interpretation, visualization, and communication skills
- To strengthen critical comprehension skills and digital literacy, particularly through data visualization and website content creation
- To gain an understanding of the data collection and visualization process through a reflection of the methods and experience
- To identify the ethical concerns that accompany working with different kinds of data related to US rural health
